Fall & Winter Check-Up Time!
With Fall here it’s time to start thinking about your heating system. By spending time at the beginning of heating season, you can look forward to a more efficient and reliable level of comfort while saving money on energy and repairs.
Some things you need to have done to ensure that your system is working properly.
- Change your filter. Dirty air filters decrease efficiency and place extra wear and tear on your equipment. Check your filter monthly and change it as soon as dirt appears, or at least every three months. If you have pets inside, once a month is probably the best.
- Get Programmed. Check your thermostat settings to ensure maximum efficiency during the cooler months, and consider installing a programmable thermostat to save even more. Set the unit a few degrees lower while away or while sleeping and a few degrees higher prior to your arrival home or the alarm clock.
- Preventative Maintenance. No heating checklist is complete without an annual maintenance inspection. We at Four Star Plumbing & Air Conditioning offer them for $70 without a Service Agreement and with a Service Agreement, you recieve two HVAC inspections per year free. We will perform a visual inspection, identify any issues that need to be address that will be a problem in the future, check your duct work, condenser, air handler and all working parts to ensure your system is running efficiently. Tune-ups can help save up to 30% off of your energy bill each year.
- Check your duct work. Each year, whether in heating or cooling season it’s good to check for holes, leaks, tears and gaps. Repairs should be made using duct mastic tape or foil backed tape but not duct tape, which may break down over time.
- Check for leaks. Air leaks around doors, windows, outlets or pipes leading to the outdoors can decrease your comfort and increase your energy bill. Seal any gaps with caulking or weatherstipping where appropriate.
- Replace your heating system. If your unit underperformed last winter or is more than 12 years old, it may be time to replace it with a new high efficiency system. An unreliable unit may leave you and your family in the cold.
